The line between fact and fiction, between reality and fantasy, has often been blurry to those who live their lives pursuing creative endeavors. For the Underlords of the Overworld, a group of middle-aged guys playing instrumental rock and roll, they knew they were damned to obscurity. And yet, they sought to play live, to bring their brand of rock n’ roll riffage to, if not the masses, then perhaps a patron or two at a local club. But how should such an outfit be presented? What’s their story? They certainly had one, and it was interesting. So, they turned to author H. Prescott Lemon to craft their tale into prose. It became a multi-volume rock and roll romp with which even the most vaunted rockumentary cannot compete. While it may be that H. P. Lemon took certain artistic liberties with their story, it is grounded in truth. In fact, a full 1% of the story is a seed of truth that grew into a mighty yarn, 99% of which is utter fantasy. But it’s a fun fantasy! And the story of the Underlords wouldn’t be complete without a slew of other artists damned to obscurity, such as those you find here on this platter. From side characters such as the folksy Scurvy & Rickets to the Christian rock of Reverend Crenshaw Boone, the stories are filled with colorful characters, quirky moments, and calamitous events. And many of the bands and artists that fill the pages of these stories have found their way onto this collection of songs. Are these bands real? Perhaps not, but the songs are. And they are 100% awesome. If the album serves as nothing more than an amusing set of oddball tunes, then so be it. But for those who wish for a full, 110% immersive experience, pick up or order the trilogy of the damned, by H. Prescott Lemon. Read them, and get to know the vast Underlords Universe. And let these songs provide the accompaniment the stories so richly deserve.
