The roots of “Waiter There’s a Demon in My Soup” are deep, and snake their way into the bedrock that underlies the Underlords of the Overworld. Originally titled “Blue Scorpion,” Brian Cleveland conceived the main riffs around 1990. Recorded by the Underlords in 2018 and released in 2019 with Larry Marse on drums, Brian always said the track felt unfinished – incomplete in some way. I suggested he let it go and move on to other projects.

Then in early 2022, Brian went over my Executive Producer head and contacted Derek Sherinian, known for his work with Alice Cooper, Kiss, Dream Theater, Black Country Communion, Sons of Apollo, etc., etc. Brian sent him “Soup” along with “Dirty Hands Make a Great Sandwich” and with Derek’s new keyboards added in, I was compelled to have to make something of the venture. So, here it is: an extended single, of sorts.

I sent Derek’s keyboard parts to Kevin Neal, who recorded the original versions in 2018, offering him an opportunity to revisit those recordings and offer new mixes. Derek’s keyboards, however, also inspired Brian and drummer/producer Andy Anderson to re-think the guitar, bass, and drum arrangements. All new drums, bass, and guitar were recorded to Derek’s keyboards, creating entirely new versions of the songs.

Perhaps Brian can finally be satisfied with these tracks and can give this a rest.
